Research Paper Asks: Does 360 Degree Feedback Improve Employee Performance?

Dr. Omkar Harish Chandra Dalvi, Prof. Dr. S. B. Sawant, Prof. Dr. R. A. Mohite, Dr. Shital Sambhaji Sawant & Mr. K.K. Bajaj · Journal of Propulsion Technology · 2023 ·

The study set out to examine 360 feedback as a tool for improving employee performance while also exploring the barriers and challenges in implementing 360 feedback. The authors collected data through a structured questionnaire completed by 70 employees from two private companies and analysed the responses using percentage analysis. Alongside the survey findings, the paper considers how organisations can improve the effectiveness of 360 feedback by addressing common implementation challenges. Rather than focusing only on the feedback itself, the research highlights the importance of organisational support, participant preparation and adapting the process to the organisation's own culture and needs.

Key takeaways

What This Means for Your 360 Process

Lumus360 believes the practical learning from this research is that the success of a 360 feedback process is linked to more than just the smooth production of 360 feedback reports - it also requires the following:

Organisational Alignment

The process has to align to the organisation's culture, beliefs and goals, rather than applying a standard approach across every organisation. There are two key parts to this:

Good Organisational Engagement

Putting effort into ensuring that the organisation is on side is critical and includes:

Follow-Through Support

The research recognises that the feedback maturity level of most participants is low, and they therefore definitely benefit from targeted support to interpret the feedback and establish development objectives. Lumus360's experience supporting the implementation of thousands of 360 feedback interventions fully supports this, and our 360 feedback coaching service outlines best practice in this area.
